Beer is an alcoholic beverage, though there are non-alcoholic formulations of beer available that we will be reviewing and discussing in our article forums as well. Beer is one of the world's oldest and most popular beverages, and some of the most ancient writings discuss beer.
Beer is made from fermentation of sugars & starch, the most common being malt & barley. In addition to these, many beers are made from rice, wheat, and corn., usually combined with barley. The starch sources are put into a mash and boiled with water, while the starch molecules are broken down into a sugary liquid called wort. This wort is then flavored with hops (used both during and at the end, as 'finishing hops') which also help to preserve the beer.
Many people enjoy using other ingredients to flavor their beers such as fruit and herbs. After properly cooling the wort, yeast is added to create the fermentation, which produces alcohol as it eats the sugars. There are various ingredients in beer, as well as several different methods of production which help to create the different classifications, such as ales and lagers.
